The Classroom Teacher's Seminar is not being offered in 2006 due to a lack of funding. If you know someone who would be interested in underwriting the costs of this fabulous program, please contact us. This program would be offered primarily to Day School teachers. In the meantime, check out the Teva Seminar for Jewish Education. It has an entire track dedicated to Congregational Education and a great deal to offer Day School teachers as well.

Classroom Teacher's Seminar in Jewish Environmental Education
June 23 + 24, 2004

Save the date!

After ten years of highly successful seminars for informal Jewish educators, the Teva Learning Center is proud to announce the first such seminar exclusively for classroom teachers. Maybe you have been to Teva and want to learn more about how you can incorporate some of the concepts into your classroom. Maybe you have never been to Teva but want to see what it's all about. Or maybe you're just ready for a different kind of seminar - fun and intimate, but with workshops that provide real, deep, take-home knowledge. Well, for two days, June 23-24, 2004, you can have all of that and the opportunity to meet and network with other dynamic day school teachers and administrators.

The program is designed for teachers whose schools attend Teva and draws upon our experience as the oldest and largest Jewish environmental education center in the field. Workshops will explore how to integrate the Teva model and message into your classroom and school, whether you teach Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Hebrew, Judaics, or are an administrator.

Are you interested in attending but your school does not attend Teva? Please contact us for special arrangements.

Confirmed keynote speaker and Rabbi in Residence: Rabbi Lawrence Troster

Courses in the seminar will rotate around 4 main themes*:
  • Judaics - Will include workshops on tefilah, chumash, gemarra, Hebrew, and middot
  • Israel - How can we connect to Israel through the environment? We will look at current environmental programs, traditional Zionist philosophy and how the environment has been a central issue in the history of the state of Israel.
  • Gardening - Will showcase the newly created garden-based curriculum from Alumot, The Jewish Gardening Project, and will discuss the new school garden of the Saligman Middle School of Philadelphia and its integration into the school's curriculum through the help of the Teva Learning Center. We will also use the on-site Adamah gardens of the Isabella Freedman Retreat Center as an outdoor classroom to demonstrate how effective a school garden can be in fostering environmental awareness and stewardship.
  • Science - Will showcase two exciting programs: "School Energy Audits-Teaching Environmental Responsibility While Greening Your Facility" and "Eco-Inquiry and the School Yard Ecosystem," a program of the Institute for Ecosystem Studies. These two programs will demonstrate how your school and its grounds can serve as a living laboratory for numerous ecological concepts. Students learn while experiencing their school environments in creative, engaging and revealing new ways.

Plus plenty of fabulous food, a beautiful setting, and opportunities to swim, hike, canoe, and play tennis or basketball in your free time.

Small discounts are available for schools that send multiple teachers - contact us to find out more!

Cost for this retreat is only $130 all-inclusive. Registration begins at 10 AM on the 23rd, and workshops open at 11 AM. We can provide housing for the night of the 22nd if you will be traveling from a long distance. All meals will be strictly kosher and we can accommodate almost all dietary restrictions.

Register online or call the Teva Learning Center 212-807-6376 for more information.

We look forward to seeing you there!
