About the Seminar
The Teva Seminar on Jewish Environmental Education is a professional development opportunity for those interested in Jewish education, environmental sustainability, camping, gardening, or just plain having fun. Through studying Torah, hiking, singing, and gardening, educators and lay-leaders engage in a three thousand year old dialogue about the connection between God, earth, and humanity. Participants will gain the skills to bring excitement and vibrancy to formal and informal educational settings through workshops with leading Torah scholars, scientists, and educators. Check out our four diverse tracks to see what is right for you.
Tracks
Participants must register for a specific track; however, most classes will be open to all participants. The Ethics and Texts and Congregational Education tracks include educators from Hebrew College. Overall, the Seminar will feature nationally renowned experts teaching about the following topics:
Ethics and Texts Track:
- Study Biblical, Rabbinic and Contemporary texts that address the relationship between humanity and Creation
- Debate different approaches to reading texts with a diverse array of Torah scholars
- Develop a sophisticated Jewish response to pressing environmental issues
- Beginner to advanced level classes available
Congregational Education Track:
- Bring lively and effective Jewish environmental programming to your classroom or congregation
- Learn great family, holiday and Israel program ideas
- Facilitate Tfilah B�Teva, nature inspired prayer
- Green your synagogue and school: find out how to lead by example
Camp and Wilderness Track:
- Discover experiential education at its best through arts & crafts, music, drama, storytelling
- Create transformative nature experiences and teach Jewish values through camping, hiking, and backpacking
- Become familiar with local flora and fauna, and their edible and medicinal qualities
- Practice camping, outdoor living skills, and safety protocol
- Learn how to teach Torah on the trail
Organic Agriculture and Educational Gardening Track:
Facilitated by The Jewish Farm School. Please note that portions of the Gardening track will be available only to those who pre-register for that track. For more details, please go to Jewish Farm School.
- Learn the basics of starting and maintaining an educational garden
- Participate in a variety of hands-on gardening and permaculture workshops for both the novice and veteran gardener
- Spend a morning working on an organic farm in the Hudson Valley-meet the farmers, get dirty, and learn about small-scale, sustainable agriculture
- Study traditional and contemporary texts that explore Jewish agricultural principles

Food and Accommodations:
Surprise Lake Camp, a rustic summer camp located in the Hudson valley, is the perfect location to be inspired and refreshed by nature�s beauty. You are sure to be swept off your feet by the camp�s picturesque spring-fed lake and the close to 500 wooded acres. To learn more, go to www.surpriselake.org.
Accommodations are provided in camp bunks, private rustic cabins, or at a nearby hotel. Participants staying in camp bunks should bring linens and a towel.
All meals are kosher and vegetarian.
Arrival and Departure:
The seminar begins promptly at 10:00 am Monday, June 2nd and ends at 4:00 pm on Thursday, June 5th. Participants are welcome to arrive the night before or stay an extra night for a small fee. Teva will provide transportation from Stewart Airport in Newburg, NY, the Amtrak station in Poughkeepsie, NY or the Metro-North train station in Cold Spring, NY. Ground transportation to Metro-North trains is available from all of the major NYC airports.
