Tikkun Tip #6

Save Water

"Two men were fighting over a piece of land. Each claimed ownership and bolstered his claim with proof. To resolve their differences, they agreed to put the case before the rabbi. The rabbi listened but could not come to a decision because both seemed to be right. Finally he said, 'Since I cannot diecide to who this land belongs, let us ask the land.' He put his ear to the ground, and after a moment straightened up. 'Gentlemen, the land says that it belongs to neither of you - but that you belong to it.'"
           -Chasidic Tale (source unknown)

Save water by doing any or all of the following: install water-saving showerheads, place weighted plastic bottles in the toilet tank, and fix leaking faucets.

The average person consumes more water in the bathroom than anywhere else. So these tips are excellent ways to reduce water consumption. A shower alone use up to 4 gallons a minute. A leaky faucet can use as much as 50-100 gallons of water a day. However, a quarter of all domestic water consumed in most countries goes straight down the toilet. In the United States that means that every time someone flushes another 5 gallons of pure water is polluted. For just one person, the typical 5-gallon flush contaminates about 7,500 gallons of fresh water each year to move a mere 165 gallons of body waste (source: Save Our Planet, by Diane MacEachern). By putting a weighted plastic bottle in the toilet tank, the water saved will equal the volume of the bottle(s) used.
