Home Energy AuditWe have all read the headlines or heard the news about Global warming. What is the big deal? Well, Global warming leads to Global climate change, which profoundly affects us all, including the rest of the critters that inhabit this grand planet. Climate change affects agriculture productivity, how much we heat or cool our homes, how we obtain our water, ocean currents, animal migration, and much, much more. How can we help?
First some wisdom from one of the foremost leaders of the modern Zionist era:
"The energy contained in nature, in the earth and its waters, in the atom and the sunshine will not avail us if we fail to activate the most precious vital energy: the moral-spiritual energy inherent in humankind, in the inner recesses of our being, in our mysterious, uncompromising unfathomable and divinely inspired soul."
David Ben-Gurion, First Prime Minister of Israel
Save energy, money, air quality, precious natural resources, and prevent global warming by conducting a home energy audit and making the necessary changes.
To find out where your home is poorly insulated or energy-inefficient, ask your utility company for a comprehensive home energy audit.
An energy audit can be obtained through your local utility (call the customer service number on your bill) which in many cases subsidize audits. A home energy audit should include a blower door test to identify sources of air infiltration. Then be sure to caulk and weatherize all leaks identified by the test. Start with insulating the attic and basement, then weatherize windows and doors. Of course, you can start caulking even without a test. A simple way to detect drafts is to hold a lighted candle up to windows, doors, electric boxes, plumbing fixtures and attic openings on a windy day (be very careful to keep an open flame away from flammable materials). If the flame flickers air is leaking out. Similarly, if windows and doors rattle in their frames, its a sign of escaping air.
