Save Used batteries ina Box on a Shelf

4 Shevat 5762 / January 17, 2002

Upon creating the first human beings, God guided them around the Garden of Eden, saying; Look at My creations? See how beautiful and perfect they are! I created everything for you. Make sure you dont ruin or destroy My world. If you do, there will be no one after you to fix it.. -Midrash Kohelet (Ecclesiastes) Rabbah 7:13

SAVE USED BATTERIES IN A BOX ON A SHELF, DO NOT THROW THEM AWAY. RECYCLE THEM and/or BUY RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES.

Contact your local municipality to find out where such hazardous material can be disposed of properly. Often, libraries or other public institutions, will have a collection bin.

According to Sierra magazine each year Americans throw away 2.5 billion pounds of household batteries containing mercury, cadmium, lead, lithium, manganese dioxide, silver, nickel, and zinc. Scientists worry that burning them in incinerators releases toxic chemicals into the air. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requires that businesses dispose of them as hazardous waster; however, no regulations exist for batteries used at home. By buying rechargeable batteries you will save money in the long run and keep more toxic metals out of your landfills or incinerators. source: Diane MacEachern, "Save Our Planet."
