Tikkun Tip #18

Websites that make it easy to save the earth

Shalom and welcome to Tikkun Tips!

Websites that make it easy to save the earth.

Judaism has always encouraged people to study, to pursue knowledge, and to use that knowledge toward good ends. One perspective on technological advances is to see them as tools for action, and in our modern, technological age, taking action is sometimes as easy as pointing and clicking. Here are some helpful websites that take little time and no money to help save the planet.

The Rainforest Site: http://www.therainforestsite.com/. Every time you visit and click on the link you save 11.4 square feet of endangered rainforest. They also have links to their partner sites, The Hunger Site, The Animal Rescue Site, The Child Health Site, and The Breast Cancer Site. Following links to popular websites like Amazon.com saves even more rainforest!

The Ecology Fund: http://ecologyfund.com/ecology/_ecology.html. Offers several different causes to contribute to simply by clicking on the links. By registering with the website, you can help even more.

How these sites work: The sites have a variety of corporate and organizational sponsors who donate money every time a user clicks on the "Click Here" button. They also donate money for every time the user links to their site. The money goes directly to an organization whose purpose it is to provide the given service. For example, with respect to preserving land, the money donated goes directly to the Nature Conservancy, which then buys up land, and, you guessed it, conserves it. These sites also provide a lot of useful and important information centered around a variety of causes. I have found it helpful to set one of these sites as my home page so every time I log on, I click once, save part of the world, and then move on to whatever webpage I was interested in going to to begin with.

Two sites that are more politically directed toward action are http://actionnetwork.org/ and http://www.saveourenvironment.org/. Both of these sites offer extensive information about a variety of issues and easy ways to write to your elected officials.

What can’t we do with the Internet?

Note: There was an error in last week’s message: Individual laws that are regularly packaged with others to create larger bills are known as "riders," not "writers."
